Built by Reg Brown, who ran the boatyard, in 1984 and named for his dog. 1)Jahan named for Brown’s dog – R.Simper Over the years she has had an orange, yellow, then orange and now light blue hull colour.
Jahan has been used for river cruises from the boatyard since her launch in June 1984. This was covered by the EADT at the time.
Special Cruiser launched
‘Disabled people are being given the chance to cruise along the River Deben in a specially fitted-out craft thanks to a boatyard owner’s £70,000 project. Waldringfield Boatyard owner Mr Reg Brown is making his purpose-built cruiser Jahan available for river trips for the disabled free of charge twice a week.
Jahan can carry up to 54 passengers and can cater for school parties, birdwatching groups and other special interest organisations in addition to pleasure trippers. At times the cruiser will be made available to elderly people for half price trips. The 38 feet cruiser, which has been specially fitted with a hydraulic wheelchair hoist and other adaptations for the disabled, was launched yesterday by television presenter and former BBC newsreader Robert Dougall, and multiple sclerosis victim Mrs Barbara McDowell.
Said Mr Dougall ‘This represents a considerable investment in time, money and ingenuity. Here now is a matchless stretch of water with a matchless cruiser to sail it. It was an important enterprise which would give endless pleasure to people of all ages’, he said.
The boatyard’s project also includes the construction of a 120 ft long jetty, and a new reception and refreshment complex.
The launching of “Jahan” was performed by Rev John Waller, And Father Sam, with TV reporter Ian McDougal on the microphone.
