There is one name in particular, (may have been others) that did not appear on the list of men who served in the war and that was Albert Read. I may be wrong as he may have come to the village just after the war. Albert and his wife Gertie lived in the first of the Cement cottages. (Now John Buck) Albert was very seriously wounded at Dunkirk when a shell went through one of his lungs and quite frankly it was a miracle that he survived. Albert and Gertie moved up to live in 7, Village Way with their 5 children until Albert sadly died and Gertie moved to No 3 until she also passed away.
Albert was one of the founder members of the Bowls Club and he took over from Nelson Sharp as groundsman for a short time.
