It has been said that Hugh Pearl was returning from a secret mission on April 1st 1939 when his seaplane crashed in the Deben leaving this scar in the mud. The simple headstone half way along Garden Field was the only reminder of his heroism.
Others, more sensibly, say it’s obviously to do with drainage as we were informed by the company Hugh Pearl :
“I believe that your photograph shows the top section of a land drainage outfall headwall. I would guess it was probably installed in the 70`s or 80`s”
Whilst in the vicinity it is worth noting the line of dead (what type?) trees to west at the bottom of Garden Field. Presumably, they were not salt tolerant and died after the sea wall was breached (Simper says when – the 1930s? – think there’s a story here).

The actual location is in the chart below and it is in the parish. Just by the path and roughly in the middle of Garden field.
