Waldringfield History Group
Report to Parish Council 2011/12
The History group remains well attended and enthusiastic. Last year’s annual talk was “Waldringfield at Leisure”; as usual this was well attended and enjoyed by the audience. An adapted version of our Waldringfield at War talk was presented to the final year school children and they obviously enjoyed it judging by the thank you letters we received. It was decided that for 2011/12 the group would not produce a talk although we did in fact end up doing so.
Some detailed research work has been done by members. The gravestones in both church yards have been catalogued and are available on the group’s website www.waldringfieldia.com . In preparation for future projects some work has been done with both the 1911 census and the 1948 electoral roll.
Three articles have been written and printed in the RDA’s “Deben” magazine. Some work has been done in organising the group’s material on the website although much remains to be done. Most of this material is currently only available to registered users, any villagers interested can use the email address on the site to request access.
One of our members is now in her second year of learning palaeography in order to read the Court Rolls at the Suffolk Record Office. This will hopefully produce some very interesting results in future years.
Finally, the group did present an annual talk two weeks ago. Malcolm Crawford has had a lifelong passion for the Titanic. This being the Centenary of her sinking the group collaborated with him to produce both an evening talk and a full day exhibition of his vast collection of Titanicabilia.
The group will meet later this month to decide on the next project.
