War Service William enlisted as a private in the Suffolk regiment and fought in France where he was severely wounded on 30 Aug 1917, which entitled him to wear a Wound Stripe but eventually resulted in him being invalided out in 1918. Apparently when he died, remains of shrapnel from his wounding were found in his lungs. |

Connection to Waldringfield William was born in Kirton between April and June 1886 to Herbert and Elizabeth Bear (nee Rudd). By 1901 at the age of 14 he was a cattle stockman on a farm in Kirton but, following his marriage to Jessie Prentice in Woodbridge in 1909, he was by 1911 a market gardener at Falkenham. After the war they lived at River View Cottages, Waldringfield and then Rosemary Cottage in Fishponds Road until his death in 1964. |

Life after the War Not known except that he and his wife were living in Waldringfield by 1920 until his death in 1964. His son Leslie (known as ‘Rupert’) was editor of Hansard. |
