School Road 1910 – Rural East Suffolk In Old Photographs – Edward Chilvers

 

East side – Prior to the opening of the new school in 1875 School Road was a little used lane with only one property, Miss Mary Pretymans cottage, on the east side of the lane. The coprolite carts no doubt used the lane to reach the coprolite pit where High Elms now stands. Two modern houses Four Seasons and Ashfield were built in what was the garden of the other half of Lilacs . The Yachtages Cornfield Cottage , Debens October Cottage Eve Cottage were built in the 1980s on a parcel of land that was part of Cyril Waller’s Dairy Farm . It was part of a water meadow and builders had difficulty with the foundations, eventually putting in two large concrete rafts.

Oakland A ‘Colt’ bungalow built on the site of Miss Mary Pretyman’s cottage/ The old cottage which had four bedrooms & a separate staircase to each room. The old cottage was demolished by Mr. Cyril Waller in the 1960’s when he wanted to retire to Waldringfield and his wife refused to live in an old cottage. The new bungalow was named Dalhousie after Mrs. Waller’s sojourn in India as a child. And renamed Oakland by the Lloyds who bought it out of Mrs. Waller’s estate. Liitle Oakland In the garden of Oakland. When Cyril Waller pulled down the old cottage he used some of the bricks to build a garage/workshop. This was converted by the Lloyds into a Granny annexe.

The Crags 1902 Built by Robert Rix, the Rix’s are long time residents in Waldringfield. Robert was a farmer/beekeeper and at one time the village Post Master.

High Elms  , The Bays , up the track to Sandcliff and onwards to Sunny hill then the Playing Field.

West side – Sullivan place and  The Sullivan Place and Sunny Hill cul de sacs were set by Mrs. Dorothy Stevens in the early 1960’s when she gave up her chicken farm. A local wag renamed them as Upper & Lower Stevenage. Mrs. Stevens named Sullivan Place as it was next to the garage run at that time by Mr. Gilbert and Sunny Hill from its position on a sunny hill). The plots on Sullivan Place were intended to be for young couples who were good at DIY, and most of the properties there were in fact built by their first owners.

Then the School and to the right the [Village Hall]] and The Folly or School Lane.
